Daemonkin Possessed Space Marines with Herald Support

Possessed Space Marines are generally considered one of the lower tier units in the CSM codex, given their high points cost and random abilities.

However, in the new Khorne Daemonkin Codex they gain some capabilities/support options that really kick them up a notch:

1 – Now Possessed have BOTH “Mark of Khorne” and “Daemon of Khorne” rules, meaning they naturally have a 5++, Fear, Rage, Counter-attack, and Furious Charge. Additionally, instead of Daemon of Khorne giving them Daemonic Instability and Warp Storm, they get Fearless instead, which is quite a significant upgrade. All of this for just +1 point more than normal Mark of Khorne Possessed from the CSM book (so 30 PPM now).

2 – Heralds of Khorne from the Daemonkin book can now attach to Possessed, meaning they can buff them with the Exalted Loci of Wrath to give the whole unit Hatred. For a close combat unit, being able to take a cheap, effective source of Hatred can be a tremendous buff.

3 – The new Blood Tithe rule means that, if you kill (or have killed) enough units, you can give army-wide bonuses, like Adamantium Will or FNP or +1A for any unit with the “Blood for the Blood God” special rule. Possessed in the Daeminkin book benefit from this, so this also can be a tremendous buff.

4 – Having the Skull Cannon readily available from the same codex (i.e. not having to take allied Choas Daemons) means that not only do you have access to a solid fire support unit and a better than average Chariot to support your Possessed, but that you can make up for their lack of Assault Grenades by simply hitting (not wounding or killing, just hitting) at least one model from the unit the Possessed are about to charge with the S8 AP4 blast from the Skull Cannon.

Put all this together and Possessed can become quite competitive. Consider the following:

-Herald of Khorne with Exalted Loci of Wrath

-9 x Possessed Space Marines

-Land Raider

-Skull Cannon

Herald and Possessed ride in the Land Raider, move up field turn 1-2, then assault starting turn 3+. If you are able to get 4 Blood Tithe Points, then spend them on “Apocalyptic Fury,” granting everyone (including your Possessed) +1A for the turn they assault. Depending on what special Possessed mutation they roll for, they get the following:

1 – +1A/+1I Mutation – On the charge, this means they have 54 S6 AP- attacks, all striking at I5… against most opponents, they will hit on 4+s (with re-rolls from Hatred), so an average of 40-41 hits…. against anything T4 or below (i.e. most MEQs), this leads to an average of 33-34 wounds, which is enough to cause 11 unsaved wounds against models in Power Armor and 5-6 unsaved wounds against models with a 2+ save. Against vehicles, unless they have AV13/14 rear armor, they should be able to glance pretty much anything to death with their S6 attacks.

2 – Shred Mutation – On the charge, this means they have 45 S6 AP- attacks with Shred… against most opponents, they will average of 33-34 hits…. against anything T4 or below (i.e. most MEQs), having S6 and Shred leads to an average of 32-33 wounds, which is enough to cause 11 unsaved wounds against models in Power Armor and 5-6 unsaved wounds against models with a 2+ save. Similarly, against vehicles, they should be able to glance pretty much anything to death outside Land Raiders/Monoloths with their massed S6 attacks.

3 – AP3 Weapon Mutation – On the charge, this means they have 45 S6 AP3 attacks … against most opponents, they will average of 33-34 hits…. against anything T4 or below (i.e. most MEQs), having S6 leads to an average of about 28 AP3 wounds, which devastate any unit in Power Armor and on average cause 4-5 unsaved wounds against models with a 2+ save. As with the other cases, they should be able to glance pretty much anything to death outside Land Raiders/Monoloths with their massed S6 attacks.

Combine all this with the aforementioned Skull Cannon to ensure that the Possessed can strike at their full Initiative value when charging and you relaly have a powerhouse unit here against a wide variety of opponents.
